Who it's for

Built for independent lawyers

Wherever you are in your career, you pick the matters and set the fee.

  • Solo and small-firm lawyers

Fill the gaps between client work with fixed-fee matters you choose.

  • Fractional and outside GCs

Take on one-off contract matters alongside your retainers.

  • Freelance lawyers

Quote only on matters that fit your schedule, each with a set scope and deadline.

  • Semi-retired lawyers

Keep your skills current with a few self-contained matters, on your terms.

  • Lawyers between roles

Keep your hand in practice while you decide what's next.

  • Returning to practice

Ease back in with clearly scoped matters, one at a time.

How it works

One matter, start to finish

  1. Get listed

Join the list and we'll confirm your admission. Once we open in your state, you'll see matters there.

  2. Quote what you want

Every matter shows its scope and deadline up front. Name your fixed fee and turnaround, or pass. No hourly billing.

  3. Do the work, get paid

If the client accepts, they engage you on your own engagement letter. Files and messages stay in one workspace, and the client pays your fee straight into your account.

Questions

What lawyers ask first

How does the platform earn if lawyers pay nothing?

Clients pay a separate software fee for each matter, on top of your fee. We take nothing from your fee.

Is By the Matter a law firm?

No. By the Matter is software operated by Mairit, Inc. It is not a law firm, does not give legal advice and does not recommend lawyers. Lawyers pay nothing to use it, and no part of a lawyer's fee goes to Mairit.

Do I set my own fee?

Yes. You quote a fixed fee and a turnaround for each matter you want. The client sees your quote and decides.

What kind of matters?

We start with commercial contract review for small and growing businesses: services agreements, consulting agreements and statements of work. We plan to add more matter types.

Who are the clients?

Clients will be small and growing businesses. Each client will engage you directly, on your own engagement letter.

Is there a minimum commitment?

No. Quote when it suits you and pass on anything that doesn't.

How do I get paid?

The client pays your fee to your own account. It never passes through ours.

Do I need my own malpractice insurance?

Yes. The client engages you directly, so your own cover applies. It needs to be in place before your first matter.

When does it open?

We open state by state. Join the list and we'll email you as we open new states.

Can I help shape it?

Yes. Early members tell us how matters should run, from the brief to the workspace. Say so when you reply to our first email.
