In short
- Joining the early list is free and commits you to nothing.
- By the Matter is a software platform run by Mairit, Inc., not a law firm.
- Separate listing terms apply before you are listed or see a matter.
1. About these terms
These terms apply to bythematter.com (the "site") and to joining the By the Matter early list on it. "We" and "us" mean Mairit, Inc., the company that operates By the Matter. You agree to these terms when you join the early list. Our privacy notice explains how we handle your information.
2. What the site is
The site describes a platform for independent lawyers that has not opened yet, and lets lawyers join an early list. What it describes, including fees, the types of matters and the states where we open, may change before launch. Three things will not change: lawyers will not pay to join, be listed or use the workspace; we will never charge lawyers a commission or take any part of their fee; and lawyers' fees will be paid to them directly.
3. Who can join
The early list is for lawyers admitted to practice in a US state or the District of Columbia who are 18 or older.
4. Joining the early list
Joining is free and creates no obligation for you or for us. It does not guarantee an invitation, a listing or any matters. We invite lawyers state by state once we have confirmed their admission and good standing.
The details you give us, including where you are admitted, must be accurate and your own. You can leave the list at any time by emailing us, and we may remove anyone from the list.
5. Listing terms come later
Before you are listed or see a matter, you will need to accept separate listing terms, and we will confirm your admission, good standing and malpractice insurance. Those terms, not these, will govern your use of the platform.
6. No legal services
By the Matter is a software platform operated by Mairit, Inc. Mairit, Inc. is not a law firm. We do not provide legal services or legal advice, and we do not rate, rank or recommend lawyers. Nothing on the site is legal advice, and using the site does not create an attorney-client relationship with us.
7. Using the site
Do not submit someone else's details, interfere with the site, try to get around its security, collect data from it with automated tools, or use it for anything unlawful.
8. Your ideas and feedback
If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without any obligation to you.

We may update these terms. If a change is material, we will email you at least 14 days before it takes effect. Changes apply only going forward and do not affect disputes that arose before them. The date at the top shows when these terms last changed.
